Be Alert to the Signs of a Failing Water Heater

Posted on 25th Sep 2014

It’s never fun having to go without hot water. It makes the most basic things like showering or bathing, washing your hair, washing your clothes, etc. a lot more unpleasant or even impossible. Most traditional water heaters are built to last anywhere from seven to 10 years. If yours is around that age, you want to look out for warning signs that you may need a water heater replacement. The plumbers with Downing Plumbingwant to share some information that can help save you a great deal of hassle. If you do need a new water heater, we’ll have one installed quickly so your home gets back to normal.

Pay Attention to These Signs

If you pay attention to your water heater (and most people don’t), it will usually warn you before it fails. These signs include:

  • Not Enough Hot Water: The usual suspects when this type of problem crops up include a faulty electric heating element or bad gas burner. If your appliance is seven years or younger, then it would make sense to get it fixed. If your water heater is older though, you should consider replacing it.
  • Bad-Smelling Water: Your water can become foul-smelling due to sediment which accumulates in your hot water heater tank. While the tank can be flushed to alleviate the problem, that is only recommended if it is 10 years old or younger. If it is older, it should be replaced.
  • Rust or Corrosion: If you spot either, or water is forming at the top or bottom of your tank, then that tank should be replaced.
  • Dirty Water: If you are experiencing this problem, ask your neighbors to see if they are experiencing the same thing. If the answer is “no,” then you probably need a new water heater.

Don’t hesitate to contact Downing Plumbing if you need any sort of water heater repair or replacement. We’ll make sure you get the right water heater for your needs at an affordable price.
