BURST PIPE REPAIR
First: Shut Off the Water. Second: Call Us.
If a pipe has burst in your home, the first thing to do is shut off the water main. In most Northwest Indiana homes, the main shutoff is located where the water service enters the home — typically in the basement near the front foundation wall, or in a utility room. Turning it off stops the flooding immediately and limits the water damage while you call for repair.
Pipes burst for two main reasons in this region: freezing and physical damage. When water in a pipe freezes, it expands approximately 9% in volume — enough pressure to split copper pipe, crack PVC fittings, and split CPVC. Freeze-related bursts often occur in pipes that run through exterior walls, unheated crawl spaces, garages, or near poorly insulated areas. Physical damage bursts can occur from nail or screw punctures during renovation, ground settlement, or impact.
Downing Plumbing repairs burst pipes completely — not with repair clamps or temporary patches, but with proper pipe section replacement and fittings that restore the system to full integrity. We also advise on what caused the burst so it doesn't happen again — particularly important for freeze damage in pipes that will be in the same location next winter.
