GARBAGE DISPOSAL INSTALLATION
Getting the Installation Right the First Time
A garbage disposal installation involves three systems working together: the mounting connection to the sink drain, the plumbing discharge to the drain trap, and the electrical connection. Get any one of these wrong and you'll have leaks under the sink, a disposal that trips the breaker, or a drain that backs up. Downing Plumbing handles all three.
For kitchens that don't have an existing disposal, we assess whether a dedicated electrical circuit is needed (most disposals require a 20-amp circuit) and coordinate with an electrician if new wiring is necessary. For straight replacement jobs — old disposal out, new one in — we typically complete the job in under an hour using the existing wiring and mounting collar.
If your kitchen has a dishwasher, the disposal serves as the dishwasher's drain connection. We make sure the dishwasher drain hose is properly connected to the knockout port on the new disposal and that the drain loop is correctly positioned to prevent backflow. Small detail — big difference in whether the installation works correctly.
