GARBAGE DISPOSAL REPAIR
What the Symptoms Tell Us About the Problem
A garbage disposal that hums but doesn't spin has a jammed or seized grinding plate — something is wedged between the impellers and the grinding ring, or the motor is bound. This is often fixable by resetting the motor and manually freeing the jam with an Allen wrench through the bottom. A disposal that won't turn on at all has either tripped its internal reset button, blown a circuit breaker, or has a failed switch or motor — each with a different fix.
Leaks are the other common disposal problem. A leak from the top of the disposal at the sink flange means the mounting seal has failed. A leak from the side is typically a failed discharge or dishwasher drain connection. A leak from the bottom means the internal seal on the motor has failed — and that one means replacement, not repair.
Downing Plumbing diagnoses garbage disposal problems accurately before recommending repair or replacement. We won't recommend a new unit if the existing one can be fixed for a reasonable cost. But if the motor is gone, or the unit is old and leaking from the body, we'll install a new disposal the same visit.
