LEAK DETECTION
If Your Water Meter Is Moving With Everything Off, There's a Leak
The simplest leak detection test is free: shut off every water-using fixture and appliance in the home, find your water meter, and watch the dial or digital display for 15 minutes without using any water. If the meter is still moving, water is flowing somewhere it shouldn't be. This confirms a leak exists — but not where it is.
Hidden leaks are most commonly found in supply pipes inside wall cavities, under concrete slab floors, in crawl spaces, or in the underground supply line between the water main and the home. Slab leaks — where a supply line under the concrete floor is leaking — are particularly difficult to locate and potentially destructive. They often manifest as warm spots on the floor (from a hot water leak), sounds of water running, or moisture wicking up through cracks in the slab.
Downing Plumbing uses pressure testing to isolate leak locations within the plumbing system — separating hot from cold lines and supply from drain to narrow the search. We then access and repair the leaking pipe with minimal disruption. If you've received a high water bill or noticed any of the signs of a hidden leak, don't wait — these problems get more expensive the longer they run.
