LEAKING TOILET REPAIR
Where the Leak Is Tells Us What the Fix Is
Water on the floor around a toilet has a few possible sources. A leak at the base — especially one that appears when you flush — almost always means the wax ring seal between the toilet and the floor flange has failed. This is often accompanied by a toilet that rocks or moves when sat upon, which breaks the wax seal over time. Left unaddressed, a wax ring leak will damage the subfloor and can cause significant water damage over months.
Water appearing around the tank can come from a loose tank-to-bowl bolt, a deteriorated tank gasket, a cracked tank, or condensation on a cool tank surface in humid weather. Supply line connections are another source — the braided supply line from the wall shutoff valve to the toilet tank can crack or the connections can loosen over time.
Downing Plumbing locates the exact source of a toilet leak, repairs or replaces the failed component, and inspects the subfloor for moisture damage before completing the job. A leaking toilet that's been going on for a while may have caused more damage than what's visible — we'll let you know what we find.
