MAIN DRAIN CLEANING
When the Whole House Slows Down — It's the Main Line
Your home's main sewer line is the single pipe that carries all wastewater from
your drains, toilets, and appliances to the municipal sewer system or septic tank.
When that line becomes blocked or restricted, every fixture in your home is affected.
A main line blockage is a plumbing emergency — and it's not something you can fix
with a bottle of drain cleaner.
The most common cause of main line blockages in Northwest Indiana is tree root
intrusion. Silver maples, oaks, and willows are notorious for sending roots into
sewer pipes — especially older clay tile lines that are common in homes built before
1980 across Lake and Porter County. Grease buildup, debris accumulation, and
collapsed or offset pipe sections are other frequent culprits.
Downing Plumbing uses electric sewer rodding machines and hydro jetting equipment
to clear main line blockages completely. We can also perform a sewer camera inspection
to see exactly what's causing the problem and determine whether cleaning is sufficient
or whether a repair is needed. Annual main line cleaning is recommended for older
homes with clay tile sewer systems.
