OUTDOOR FAUCET REPAIR
NW Indiana Winters Break Outdoor Faucets
Every spring in Northwest Indiana, we repair outdoor faucets that didn't survive the winter. When a standard hose bib isn't properly shut off and drained before temperatures drop, the water remaining in the pipe expands as it freezes, splitting the faucet body or the supply pipe behind the wall. The damage isn't always obvious immediately — sometimes a cracked outdoor faucet leaks slowly into the wall for weeks before the homeowner notices water damage inside.
Freeze-proof (frost-free) sillcock faucets are designed to drain automatically when shut off — the valve seat is located 6–12 inches inside the wall in heated space, so the water in the pipe drains back. These are the correct solution for outdoor faucets in Indiana and eliminate freeze damage risk. Downing Plumbing replaces standard hose bibs with frost-free sillcocks when repairing winter-damaged outdoor faucets — preventing the same problem next winter.
Beyond freeze damage, outdoor faucets also fail from worn packing (drip from around the handle), corroded stems, and damaged aerators or vacuum breakers. We repair all of these and replace the complete faucet when the damage is beyond repair.
