WHOLE HOUSE REPIPING
When the Problem Is the Pipes Themselves
Homes built in Northwest Indiana before 1970 were routinely plumbed with galvanized steel supply pipe. Galvanized pipe has a finite service life — once the zinc coating is exhausted, the steel corrodes from the inside out, building up scale that restricts flow and weakening pipe walls that eventually develop pinhole leaks. The result is low water pressure at every fixture, rust-colored water when taps haven't been used for a while, and a pattern of recurring leaks at different locations throughout the home.
At this stage, spot repairs don't solve the problem — they just address the most recent failure in a system that will keep failing. Whole house repiping replaces all supply lines throughout the home with new copper or PEX pipe, restoring full water pressure, eliminating water quality issues from corroded pipe, and ending the cycle of repeated pipe repairs. It's the permanent solution when the pipe system as a whole has reached the end of its service life.
Downing Plumbing performs whole house repiping with minimal disruption to your home. Depending on the layout, we can often run new pipe through walls with limited drywall access, particularly when PEX tubing is used. We coordinate all required permits and inspections with local building departments.
