WATER FILTRATION
NW Indiana Water Quality Concerns
Northwest Indiana's water comes from two primary sources: Lake Michigan surface water (treated by the Hammond Water Utility, Indiana American Water, and others) and groundwater wells. Both can have quality concerns. Lake Michigan water is treated with chlorine and chloramines — effective disinfection that can affect taste and smell. Groundwater in the region can be high in iron, manganese, and hardness minerals depending on local geology. Homes with older plumbing may also see lead or copper from pipe corrosion entering the water at the tap.
Water filtration addresses these concerns at different points in the system. A whole-house sediment filter installed at the point of entry protects appliances and water heaters from particulates. A whole-house carbon filter reduces chlorine taste and odor throughout. Under-sink reverse osmosis systems provide the highest level of drinking water purification — removing dissolved solids, heavy metals, nitrates, and other contaminants to produce near-pure drinking water at the kitchen tap.
Downing Plumbing installs the filtration system that matches your actual water quality concerns — not necessarily the most expensive one. If you're unsure what your water contains, a basic water quality test is a good starting point before selecting a filtration approach.
