WATER LINE REPAIR
Signs Your Water Line Is Failing
The main water line is the buried pipe that runs from the municipal water main at the street to the shutoff valve inside your home. Most Northwest Indiana homes have water lines that are 40–80 years old — many originally installed in galvanized steel, which corrodes from the inside out over decades. As galvanized pipe corrodes, it restricts flow (causing low pressure throughout the house), and eventually develops pinhole leaks or fails at joints.
Signs of a water line problem include: low water pressure at all fixtures simultaneously (not just one), unexplained wet areas or soft ground in the yard along the path between the meter and the home, a water bill that's significantly higher than normal without a change in usage, or water that appears rusty or discolored when first turned on (a sign of internal galvanized corrosion). If your water meter is showing usage with everything shut off inside, water is leaving the line underground.
Downing Plumbing locates and repairs water line failures — from isolated joint or fitting failures that can be spot-repaired, to sections that require replacement. We work in coordination with local utility providers for any work near the meter or the main.
