WATER LINE REPLACEMENT
Galvanized Water Lines in NW Indiana Are on Borrowed Time
Many homes in Northwest Indiana — particularly those built between the 1920s and 1970s in communities like Hammond, East Chicago, Gary, Munster, and Highland — have original galvanized steel water service lines. Galvanized pipe has a service life of 40–70 years under normal conditions. When the internal corrosion becomes significant, the pipe restricts flow, the home loses water pressure, and eventually the pipe fails — either gradually through pinhole leaks or suddenly.
Galvanized water lines can't be cleaned or restored to original performance once the internal corrosion scale is advanced. Spot repairs become increasingly frequent as more sections of the pipe fail. At that point, full line replacement from the meter to the main shutoff inside the home is the right decision — and typically the most cost-effective one when weighed against repeated repair bills and water damage risk.
Downing Plumbing replaces water lines with copper or PEX tubing — both rated for underground service and expected to last 50+ years. We coordinate required permits with local building departments and schedule the utility company for any work near the municipal connection. Water service is typically restored the same day.
