WATER SOFTENER INSTALLATION
NW Indiana Hard Water Is Hard on Everything
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG). Water over 7 GPG is considered hard; over 10 GPG is very hard. Many Northwest Indiana municipalities — including those served by Lake Michigan water — supply water in the 10–15 GPG range. Groundwater-served areas can be even harder. At these levels, scale builds up inside water heaters (dramatically reducing efficiency and shortening life), clogs the small ports inside faucet cartridges and showerheads, leaves white deposits on fixtures and glassware, and reduces the effectiveness of soaps and detergents.
A properly installed water softener removes hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) through ion exchange, delivering softened water throughout the home. The installation involves splicing into the main supply line before the water heater, installing a bypass valve assembly (so the softener can be isolated for maintenance), connecting the drain line for regeneration discharge, and providing a dedicated outlet for the control head. Done correctly, a water softener is a set-and-forget appliance that significantly extends the life of plumbing fixtures and water-using appliances.
Downing Plumbing installs water softeners supplied by the homeowner or sourced through us. We ensure the installation meets local plumbing code requirements including air gap on the drain connection.
