WATER SOFTENER REPAIR
When Your Softener Stops Softening
A water softener that isn't working properly usually announces itself through familiar hard water symptoms returning: scale building back up in the shower, soap that won't lather well, spots on dishes and glassware. These symptoms mean the softener isn't regenerating correctly, the resin bed is exhausted or fouled, or the unit is stuck in bypass mode.
Common water softener problems include: a control head that isn't initiating regeneration cycles on schedule (motor failure, programming loss, or a stuck rotor disc), a brine tank that isn't drawing salt solution correctly during regeneration (clogged brine line, float valve stuck, or salt bridge in the tank), a resin bed that's fouled with iron or sediment and no longer exchanging ions effectively, or a bypass valve that's been left in bypass position. Each requires a different diagnosis and repair.
Downing Plumbing repairs water softeners from all major manufacturers including Culligan, Kinetico, Fleck, Autotrol, WaterBoss, and GE. If the unit is old enough that repair isn't cost-effective, we'll tell you honestly and can install a replacement.
